Dr Malcolm Vale is a researcher affiliated with St John's College, University of Oxford, and a member of the Faculty of History. His work focuses on Anglo-French history and the cultural history of northern Europe during the later Middle Ages (1250-1500). He is currently leading an AHRC-funded project to publish the Gascon Rolls (1317-1468) from the National Archives at Kew, combining digital and print formats.
His research explores:
- Cultural dynamics of royal and princely courts in 13th-14th century north-west Europe
- The evolution of Burgundian statehood and culture
- Secular life and thought during the Northern Renaissance (c. 1380-c. 1530)
He also co-organizes an interdisciplinary seminar on 'Legalism' at the St John’s Research Centre, collaborating with anthropologists, historians, and socio-legal experts.
