Malcolm N. MacDonald is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick. His research focuses on the relationship between discourse, communication, and institutional cultures, with specialties in intercultural ethics, security discourse, and medical discourse. He has authored over 30 years' worth of publications in top journals like Discourse and Society and Language and Intercultural Communication, and co-authored the influential book The Discourse of Security (2019).
MacDonald holds a BA from Durham University, an MEd from the University of Bristol, and a PhD from the University of Warwick. He has taught at institutions including the University of Stirling, Nanyang Technological University, and the University of Exeter. His editorial leadership includes serving as Editor of Language and Intercultural Communication since 2010.
Research interests include intercultural communication ethics, critical discourse analysis of security policies, and the sociopolitical dimensions of medical language. Key contributions include analyzing UK counter-terrorism discourse, Olympic security rhetoric, and crisis leadership frameworks in global governance. He has presented at major conferences like IALIC and CADAAD, and serves on committees for organizations like the International Association of Language and Intercultural Communication (IALIC).
MacDonald has advised doctoral programs across multiple universities and contributed to national occupational standards for intercultural work. His career also includes practical experience in education, community projects, and a decade of performing in international rock and jazz bands.
