Malcolm Keating is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Smith College, specializing in philosophy of language and classical Indian philosophy (Nyāya, Mīmāṃsā, Alaṃkāra). His research examines linguistic meaning, argumentation norms, and metaphor in Sanskrit texts. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.A. from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Keating's work bridges premodern Indian thought with contemporary analytic philosophy, exploring questions about language's limits, poetic expression, and epistemic testimony. His publications include books on Mukula's theory of language and Nyāya argumentation, with forthcoming works on Sanskrit pedagogy and reasoning in uncertainty.
His articles analyze metaphor, ellipsis resolution, and epistemic instruments in Indian philosophy. Teaching includes courses in aesthetics, philosophy of language, and Indian philosophical traditions.
