Malcolm F. Purinton is an Assistant Teaching Professor of History at Northeastern University within the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. His work focuses on the sociocultural intersections of empire, trade, and technology in beer and brewing history.

His research explores the globalization of beer styles, particularly Pilsner, through technological innovation, imperial trade networks, and shifts in consumer tastes. He contributes regularly to media outlets like Yankee Brew News and has appeared in interviews with CNN, WBZ Newsradio, and podcasts such as New Books Network and Brewing the Industrial Revolution.
Malcolm’s 2023 book Globalization in a Glass synthesizes over a decade of archival research across Belize, South Africa, Germany, and England. He also developed the teaching module “Taverns and Temples: A Global Architectural History” under an MIT grant, examining the architectural evolution of alcohol production and consumption spaces.
