Malandrinos Gerasimos

Professor Malandrinos Gerasimos has been a full-time member of the Department of Chemistry, University of Ioannina since 2003, progressing through every academic rank to his current position as Professor of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry (February 2024). He directs an active research group investigating metal–biomolecule interactions, metal-induced carcinogenesis and neurodegeneration, and the development of luminescent transition-metal complexes.

Research Interests

His work lies at the intersection of inorganic chemistry and biological systems, focusing on:

• Coordination chemistry of biologically relevant peptides, coenzymes and oligonucleotides.
• Mechanistic elucidation of metal-induced toxicity, carcinogenesis and neurodegenerative pathways.
• Synthesis and photophysical characterization of luminescent transition-metal complexes for sensing and materials applications.

Publication Trends

Recent output (2023–2024) displays a dual thrust: (i) detailed mechanistic studies of Cu(II) and Ni(II) interactions with tau and histone peptides, underscoring a sustained focus on metal-related neurotoxicity and cancer; and (ii) development of highly emissive Ag(I) and Ir(III) complexes, highlighting a growing emphasis on advanced functional materials.

Advising & Academic Service

He has supervised 10 postgraduate students (9 MSc + 1 PhD) to completion and currently mentors 4 postgraduate students (2 PhD + 2 MSc). Additionally, he serves as academic tutor for the Practical Training program, placing chemistry students in industry, hospital and private-laboratory settings for hands-on experience.

Laboratory & Facilities

His group operates within the Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry Section, equipped with IR-Raman, UV-Vis, CD, multinuclear NMR, EPR, ESI-MS and potentiometric instrumentation for comprehensive solution- and solid-state investigations.
