Craig Rice

Craig Rice is a Professor and Head of the Department of Physical and Life Sciences within the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Huddersfield. He also serves as Director of the Structural, Molecular and Dynamic Modelling Centre, reflecting his dual role in academic leadership and advanced research. He is actively accepting PhD students and continues to contribute significantly to the field of inorganic and supramolecular chemistry.

His research focuses on metallo-supramolecular chemistry, particularly the design and synthesis of functional supramolecular complexes using poly-dentate aromatic ligands. Key areas include re-programmable molecular systems, ditopic cryptate sensors, and luminescent supramolecular sensors. His work explores metal-metal communication and the development of metal-specific ligands, with applications in sensing and materials science. He has pioneered the first molecular 'reprogrammable' system and demonstrated novel mechanisms in coordination chemistry.

His recent publications (2022–2024) reveal a strong trend in luminescent transition metal complexes (e.g., Cr(III)), photochromic organic materials, and metal-based anticancer agents. His work bridges inorganic synthesis, photophysics, and medicinal chemistry, with publications in high-impact journals such as Journal of the American Chemical Society and Chemistry – A European Journal.

Craig Rice leads collaborative research with institutions including the University of Bristol, University of Geneva, and Cardiff University, particularly in structural studies and luminescent sensor development. His department has acquired a Bruker Apex Duo single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, underscoring the experimental strength of his research group. He supervises PhD students and has contributed to research degree supervision in his department.
