Dr. Maki Motapanyane is a Professor in the Department of Women’s Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University. She holds a Ph.D. from York University, an M.A. from Dalhousie University, and a B.A. (Honours) from the University of New Brunswick. Her academic work integrates feminist theory, postcolonial studies, and global gender analyses with a focus on African feminist traditions, Black feminist epistemology, maternal theory, and the political economy of care.
Dr. Motapanyane’s research explores intersections of Hip-Hop culture, stand-up comedy, and equity in organizational practices. She has published extensively, including edited volumes such as Motherhood and Lone-Single Parenting and Mothering in Hip-Hop Culture. Her work emphasizes decolonial approaches to motherhood and critiques of care labor policies.

Outside academia, Dr. Motapanyane has served on boards such as the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation and Calgary’s Future, advocating for community leadership and cultural preservation. She is an editorial board member of Atlantis: Critical Studies in Gender, Culture, and Social Justice.
