Dr. Majid Khonji is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Khalifa University (KU), where he leads the Autonomous Vehicle Laboratory (AVLab) at the KU Center for Autonomous Robotic Systems (KUCARS). He is also a research affiliate with the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) in the USA.
- Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Engineering, Masdar Institute (collaboration with MIT), 2016
- MSc in Security, Cryptology, and Coding of Information Systems, Ensimag, Grenoble Institute of Technology, France
His research focuses on Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Vehicles, and Electric Mobility, with particular emphasis on probabilistic planning, robot vision, and managing environmental uncertainties in autonomous navigation. He also explores multi-robot symbiotic autonomy for urban applications.
The AVLab under his leadership develops AI systems for navigation in extreme UAE conditions (e.g., sandstorms) and investigates robust optimization frameworks for heterogeneous robotic agents in smart communities.
Research staff in his lab include:
- Mohammad Riyadh Alkharrat (Research Assistant)
- Murad Mebrahtu (Research Associate)
- Yousof Babaa (Research Assistant)
Current vacancies include 8 PhD, 2 Postdoc, and 1 Research Engineer slot in autonomous vehicle research.
