Maja Pupovac serves as a Researcher at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory (IFDT) within the University of Belgrade and is an active member of the Laboratory for Active Citizenship and Democratic Innovation (ActiveLab). Her interdisciplinary work bridges political sociology and cultural anthropology to examine community responses to sociopolitical and environmental crises.
Her academic qualifications include:
- Doctoral studies in Political Sciences at the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki
- Master's studies in Southeast Europe at National and Kapodistrias University, Athens
Research interests focus on forced migration, nationalism, collective identities, and politics of memory stemming from her doctoral analysis of Bosnian conflict displacement. Recent work pivots to environmental sociology, investigating community perceptions of air pollution and the socio-cultural dimensions of just energy transition in Serbia's coal-dependent regions. Her approach emphasizes identity consequences and community agency in environmental change.
Current publications reveal a concentrated research trajectory toward community-centered energy transition studies. Both 2021 works analyze Lazarevac, Serbia as a critical case study, highlighting how trust deficits undermine transitional justice and how cultural identity shapes environmental attitudes. This positions her work at the nexus of democratic innovation and environmental justice in post-socialist contexts.
Through ActiveLab, Pupovac contributes to international projects examining environmental governance and democratic participation. Her expert consultancy focuses on community engagement strategies for air pollution mitigation and just transition frameworks, utilizing ethnographic methods to document local knowledge systems in energy-impacted communities.
