Maiken Risan

Maiken Risan is an Associate Professor in pedagogy at the Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education (GFU), Faculty of Education and International Studies, Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet). Dr. Risan completed her PhD in 2022 from the Centre for the Study of Professions, with research focused on the knowledge work of hybrid teacher educators. Her academic journey demonstrates a strong commitment to understanding the complex relationships between school practice and teacher education.

Dr. Risan's research centers on collaboration and partnerships between schools and higher education-based teacher education, professional knowledge, and professional development. Her work examines how teacher educators navigate the boundary between academic research and practical teaching experience. She investigates how professional identities are formed and negotiated in the context of research-based teacher education, with particular attention to the epistemic boundary work of hybrid educators who work across both school and university settings. Her research spans classroom research, professional identity formation, educational research, and the relationship between theory and practice.

Her publication record reveals a consistent focus on school-university partnerships, with particular emphasis on boundary objects, knowledge production, and professional development. She has conducted systematic reviews of assessment practices in teacher education and explored how teachers and teacher educators make sense of "research" in practice. Dr. Risan has been actively involved in the REPRESENT research project, which aims to gain increased knowledge about teachers' and leaders' representation and participation in collaborations established to strengthen the quality of teacher education programs. This project aligns with her broader research agenda examining how school-university partnerships function and what factors contribute to their effectiveness.

Beyond traditional academic publications, Dr. Risan engages in various forms of knowledge dissemination. She has contributed to media discussions about the teaching profession, participated in podcasts such as "Rekk opp hånda! Å bygge bro mellom skole og lærerutdanning," and written commentary on issues like teacher recruitment challenges and media representations of the teaching profession. As Head of Studies, she plays an important administrative role in shaping teacher education programs and policies.
