Maiken Nedergaard is a leading academic in neuroscience and physiology, currently serving as the Frank P. Smith Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Rochester since 2012. She co-directs the Center for Translational Neuromedicine and is a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters (2008) and the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Spain (2011).
- Education: MD (1983) and PhD (1988) from the University of Copenhagen.
- Academic Career: Professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy at New York Medical College (1994–2003); Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Rochester (2003–Present); Dean’s Professor (2007–2012).
Her research focuses on the physiology and pathophysiology of astrocytes, their role in synaptic plasticity, and the broader impact of neuroglia on neurological diseases such as stroke, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative disorders.
