Prof. Maik Kunert holds a professorship at the Department SciTec of Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena, specializing in metallurgy and materials science. He teaches courses on biomaterials, corrosion, lightweight materials, and physical metallurgy for bachelor's and master's students. His research focuses on developing wear-resistant steels, sustainable alloy design, and AI-driven materials modeling. Notable projects include the BMBF-funded Ms temperature estimation model and a Carl Zeiss Foundation-supported AI tool for predicting martensite start temperatures.
Research interests span high-carbon metastable austenitic steels, tribological properties, and eco-friendly materials. He has published extensively on wear resistance, phase transformations, and machine learning applications in metallurgy. His work aims to shorten material development cycles using AI while prioritizing sustainability and recyclability.
Funded by the BMBF and Carl Zeiss Foundation, his projects include an online AI predictor for Ms temperatures and a database-driven approach to sustainable steel alloys. He has presented at conferences like AI MSE 2023 and Friction 2021, advancing both academic and industrial applications of materials science.
