Dr. Maik Huttemann is a Professor at Wayne State University, holding dual appointments in the Departments of Molecular Medicine and Genetics and Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology. As Division Director for Research in the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics (CMMG), he leads groundbreaking investigations into mitochondrial function and its regulation in disease states.
Research Focus: His work centers on cytochrome c oxidase (COX) and cytochrome c (Cyt c), examining their roles in energy production, free radical generation, and apoptosis. Key areas include:
- Cell signaling pathways regulating COX and Cyt c in diseases
- Ischemia-reperfusion injury (stroke, heart attacks)
- Cancer metabolism
- Gene regulation of COX subunit isoforms
- Novel strategies to enhance mitochondrial function
- Noninvasive infrared light control of mitochondrial activity
Publications & Innovation: Recent research explores phosphorylations/acetylations of cytochrome c, metabolic reprogramming in cancer, and infrared light therapy for ischemic injuries. His team has pioneered infrared light applications for mitochondrial control with an upcoming clinical trial.
Scientific Recognition: Received the Gary A. Dudley Memorial Paper award for his mitochondria transplantation study (2024).
Mentoring: Accepting M.S. students for 2025-2026 but not Ph.D. candidates.
