Mahmut Selim Ersan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of North Dakota (UND), College of Engineering and Mines. He previously served as an Assistant Research Professor at Arizona State University’s School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment and held postdoctoral positions at Southern Nevada Water Authority and Clemson University.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, Clemson University, 2017
- M.S. in Marine Science and Management, Istanbul University, 2008
- B.S. in Environmental Engineering, Cukurova University, 2006
Research Focus:Dr. Ersan’s work addresses detection and control of emerging contaminants, including disinfection by-products (DBPs), PFAS, and microplastics in water/wastewater systems. He develops nano-enabled sensors for PFAS detection and investigates adsorption/electro-regeneration technologies for contaminant removal.
Scientific Recognition:
- Dean’s Outstanding Faculty (UND College of Engineering and Mines), 2025
- Early Career Scholars Award (UND), 2024
- AWWA Membrane Treatment Best Paper, 2021
- TUBITAK Fellowship, 2017
- Multiple poster/presentation awards (2013–2024)
Advising & Grants:Dr. Ersan mentors graduate students like Mohamed Ali (RRV-ACS Research Conference Judges’ Choice Award) and Mansurat Malik Golden Ali (ND Water & Pollution Control Conference 1st Place). His lab secures grants from ND Soybean Council, Department of Defense-SERDP, and NIH-Phase II for PFAS adsorption studies and nano-sensor development.
