Ali Ling is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the School of Engineering, University of St. Thomas. She teaches core courses including Environmental Engineering (ENG 468) and Water Resources Engineering (ENG 467), and is a registered professional engineer in Minnesota with active membership in the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and American Water Works Association (AWWA).
Her educational qualifications:
- PhD in Civil Engineering, University of Colorado at Boulder
- MS in Civil Engineering, University of Colorado at Boulder
- BCE in Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
Dr. Ling's research integrates environmental chemistry and microbiology to solve critical water infrastructure challenges. Her expertise spans PFAS treatment and source reduction, advanced oxidation processes, microbial ecology in engineered systems, and techno-economic analyses of emerging technologies. With nine years of consulting experience, she has developed solutions for municipal, mining, and manufacturing clients while contributing to regulatory reports on PFAS removal costs.
Her 2021-2024 publications reveal a dominant focus on PFAS contamination economics and treatment affordability, complemented by microbial ecology studies in water systems and corrosion science. This work demonstrates a consistent interdisciplinary approach merging engineering, microbiology, and economic analysis to address real-world environmental crises.
Dr. Ling leverages University of St. Thomas' state-of-the-art facilities including the Design Center (Lab), and collaborates with centers like the Center for Applied AI. Her industry experience directly informs her teaching methodology and research priorities, ensuring practical relevance in addressing contemporary water quality challenges.
