Mahesh Acharya is an Instructional Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Mississippi, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts. He holds an M.A. (2021) and Ph.D. (2024) in Political Science from the University of Mississippi. His research focuses on Behavioral International Relations, Comparative Politics, Foreign Policy Analysis, and Computational Social Science, with a regional emphasis on Asia. He was awarded the APSA Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant (2022) for studying global leaders' personalities using machine learning. He teaches courses like Pol 102 (Comparative Politics), Pol 103 (International Relations), and Pol 364 (Comparative Foreign Policy). His work bridges computational methods and leader behavior, including analysis of textual data from speeches and private letters of Indian Prime Ministers.
Prior to academia, he had a decade-long journalism career with the BBC and other outlets, reporting on foreign policy and diplomacy from Kathmandu, New Delhi, Beijing, and New York. His research also explores populist leaders' traits and their policy impacts, leveraging the Big Five personality framework. He maintains an active Google Scholar profile and engages in public-facing scholarship.
