Mahdi Cheraghchi is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Previously, he held faculty positions at Imperial College London (where he maintains an Honorary Senior Lecturer role) and was a researcher at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing (UC Berkeley), MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Texas at Austin. He focuses on theoretical computer science, with research interests in coding theory, cryptography, information theory, algorithms, and computational complexity.
Education: PhD in Computer Science from EPFL (Switzerland), under supervision of Amin Shokrollahi. He has supervised multiple PhD students, including current advisees Sam Boardman, Yeyuan Chen, Nikhil Shagrithaya, and Alexandra Veliche, and past students Dimitrios Myrisiotis and João Ribeiro.
Research Interests: Interconnections between electrical engineering and theoretical computer science, sparse recovery, information-theoretic privacy, pseudorandomness, approximation algorithms, and hardness of approximation. He has published extensively in top venues such as STOC, SODA, and IEEE Transactions.
Awards: Vulcans Education Excellence Award (2023), NSF CAREER Award (CCF-2236931), and recognition for contributions to theoretical computer science and education. He is a Senior Member of both ACM and IEEE.
Teaching: Courses include EECS 572/EECS 598 (Randomness and Computation), EECS 475 (Introduction to Cryptography), and EECS 574 (Computational Complexity). He emphasizes inclusive instruction and student mentorship, incorporating creative methods like video breaks and interactive tools to enhance engagement.
Grants: Actively funded by the NSF, including grants CCF-2236931, CCF-2107345, and CCF-2006455. He collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, such as semi-quantitative group testing for pathogen screening and robust secret sharing schemes.
