Maha Shalaby serves as a Research Associate at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) within the Agriculture & Business Management school and the Dairy Research Centre. Based at the Barony Campus in Dumfries, she conducts research at the intersection of molecular microbiology and food safety applications for the dairy industry.
Her research interests focus on:
- Molecular Microbiology
- Infectious Disease Diagnostics
- Food Safety Assurance Systems
- Point-of-Care Testing Development
- Dairy Processing Hygiene Monitoring
with particular emphasis on creating practical diagnostic solutions for real-world agricultural environments.
Dr. Shalaby currently leads a funded research project (2025-2026) developing multiplex molecular assays for on-site detection of spoilage organisms including Clostridia, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus in dairy processing environments. She actively supervises PhD students and collaborates with SRUC colleagues, notably through her project's Co-PI relationship with Dewhurst, R.
Her laboratory operations are centered at SRUC's Dairy Research Centre, where she develops and validates molecular diagnostic tools designed to enhance food safety standards and operational efficiency within the dairy sector.
