Dr. Magnus Nordborg serves as the Scientific Director of the Gregor Mendel Institute (GMI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2009. His academic background includes a BSc from Lund University (1989), a PhD from Stanford University (1994), and postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago (1994–1997). He has held positions as a Research Assistant Professor at Lund University (1997–2000) and at the University of Southern California (USC), where he progressed from Assistant Professor (2000–2004) to Associate Professor (2004–2011) and later Research Associate Professor (2011–present).
Research Interests: Nordborg’s work focuses on population genetics, evolutionary biology, and genomics, particularly in Arabidopsis thaliana. His lab investigates the genetic basis of adaptation, speciation, and genome evolution using computational and experimental approaches. Key projects include the 1001 Genomes Project, which maps genomic variation across natural Arabidopsis accessions, and studies on transposable elements, epigenetic regulation, and virus resistance in African green monkeys.
Recent Articles: Recent studies highlight Nordborg’s contributions to understanding life-history trade-offs in plants, epigenetic mechanisms regulating transposable elements, and the development of genomic tools like Pannagram for unbiased pangenome analysis. His work bridges computational modeling with empirical data to address fundamental evolutionary questions.
Awards & Grants: Nordborg has received two European Research Council Advanced Investigator Grants (2011, 2018) and was elected a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 2015. His research is supported by grants from the ERC, NIH, and other international funding bodies.
Labs & Teams: Nordborg leads a multidisciplinary team at the GMI, collaborating with researchers worldwide. The lab includes postdocs, PhD students, and technicians focusing on computational biology, molecular genetics, and evolutionary studies. Current projects involve genomic analyses of Arabidopsis, Aquilegia, and African vervet monkeys to unravel mechanisms of adaptation and speciation.
