Magnus Nilsson

Magnus Nilsson is a Professor of Surgery and Senior Physician at Karolinska Institutet (KI), affiliated with the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC). He serves as Head of the Division of Surgery and Oncology and Vice-Chairman of CLINTEC. His clinical roles include Senior Physician at Karolinska University Hospital’s Department of Upper Abdominal Diseases. He earned his medical degree from KI in 1992, a PhD in 2004, and became a Docent in 2011. He leads several clinical trials in gastrointestinal oncology, focusing on perioperative treatments and surgical advancements for esophageal and gastric cancers.

Research interests include translational and clinical studies on gastric/oesophageal cancer, with emphasis on chemoradiotherapy efficacy, peritoneal metastases, and quality-of-life outcomes. He chairs the international journal Diseases of the Esophagus and has coordinated multicenter trials like the NEEDS study for squamous cell carcinoma treatment strategies. Grants include Swedish Cancer Society funding for randomized trials evaluating optimal surgical timing and minimally invasive approaches.

His teaching spans undergraduate surgical education at KI. Advising includes supervising Yun Du’s PhD. Collaborative work involves Nordic and European networks in gastrointestinal oncology, addressing surgical innovations and patient-centered care.
