Magnus Nermo is a Professor of Sociology and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Stockholm University. He holds a secondary affiliation with the Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI). His research focuses on gender and social class stratification in Western societies, particularly occupational segregation and elite recruitment dynamics. He chairs key committees such as the Teacher Proposal Board II and SAGA (Working Group for Education at Undergraduate and Graduate Levels), emphasizing educational equity and gender equality initiatives.
Current research includes longitudinal studies on occupational sex segregation in Sweden and Europe over five decades. Completed projects have examined elite mobility patterns among college graduates, the role of family ties in career trajectories, and cross-national comparisons of housework division and economic dependency. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical analysis, often using Swedish and European datasets to explore social inequality mechanisms.
Nermo’s articles address themes like gender disparities in high-prestige occupations, the interplay between self-esteem and occupational outcomes, and policy implications for work-family balance. His contributions highlight persistent gender gaps in leadership roles and the evolving nature of social stratification in modern welfare states.
