Magnus Johansson is a Professor of Biomedicine at Örebro University, affiliated with the School of Medical Sciences and the Department of Medical Sciences. He holds a PhD in biochemistry from Stockholm University (1998) and became a professor in 2017. His research focuses on flaviviruses, particularly tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), investigating viral replication mechanisms, host immune interactions, and vaccine development. He has pioneered studies on TBEV NS5 protein’s role in evading host immunity and developed replicon models for vaccine design.
Education: PhD in Biochemistry (Stockholm University, 1998), Postdoc at James Cook University (Australia, 1999), Docent in Biochemistry (Södertörn University, 2007). Leadership roles include Deputy Head of the School of Medical Sciences (since 2015) and completion of the MAL leadership program (2008).
Research highlights include molecular epidemiology of TBEV, surveillance strategies using dairy milk, and prime-boost vaccination approaches. His work spans infectious disease control, with collaborative projects on edible vaccines and flavivirus biodiversity. He leads research groups in Cellular and Molecular Virology and the Inflammatory Response and Infection Susceptibility Centre (iRiSC).
Recent projects: 'Developvaccines@oru', 'Molecular epidemiology of TBEV', and 'NOVEL PRIME-BOOST STRATEGIES'. Over 70 peer-reviewed publications, with a focus on TBEV, Zika, and dengue virus biology.
