Magne Mogstad is the Gary S. Becker Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics, University of Chicago (since 2014). He also serves as a Senior Research Fellow at Statistics Norway and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). As Faculty Director of the Ronzetti Initiative for the Study of Labor Markets at the Becker Friedman Institute, he leads research on labor market dynamics.
He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Oslo, completed between 2005 and 2008. His research focuses on public economics, labor economics, and policy evaluation, with a particular emphasis on econometric methods for analyzing employer-employee data and intergenerational mobility.
Recent grants include a National Science Foundation grant ($428,460) for studying employer-employee data and intergenerational mobility (2024–2026), and Norwegian Research Council grants totaling over $1.9 million for projects on labor market inequality and men without education and work. These grants reflect his commitment to understanding structural economic challenges.
