Dr. Maggy Lord leads the Spectroscopy Lab at the University of Queensland's School of the Environment, where she develops next-generation surveillance tools using infrared spectroscopy and artificial intelligence. Her pioneering work demonstrated non-invasive malaria detection through skin and rapid Zika virus identification in mosquitoes during the 2015 epidemic. Funded by major organizations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and NHMRC, she creates field-deployable diagnostic tools for vector-borne diseases.
Dr. Lord founded the STEM Spotlight mentorship program supporting culturally diverse students and received the 2023 Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award. She serves on scientific committees for ASTMH and the Australian of the Year selection process while maintaining collaborations with international health organizations.
