معرفی
Maggie Smith is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of York, holding concurrent roles as former Biology Professor at the University of Aberdeen (2003-2012) and the University of Nottingham (2000-2003). Her academic journey includes a BSc from the University of Leeds (1979), PhD in genetics at the University of Bristol (1983), and postdoctoral research at the Universities of Glasgow and Leeds.
Research Focus: Her work centers on bacteriophage-host interactions in Streptomyces, particularly antibiotic-producing soil bacteria. Key areas include serine integrase mechanisms, protein O-glycosylation's role in antibiotic resistance, and phage genome evolution. She pioneered studies on phage integrases' application in genetic engineering and industrial microbiology.
Grants & Collaborations: Co-investigator on EU and BBSRC-funded projects including 'Optimised production chassis for pharmaceuticals' (EU, 2017-2021) and 'Mapping food waste innovation' (BBSRC, 2017-2018). Active collaborator in microbiology and synthetic biology networks.
- Awards: BBSRC Research Development Fellowship (2000-2003)
- Public Engagement: Delivered the 2016 Microbiology Society Annual Conference keynote and 'Earthy Adventures in Antibiotic Research' public lecture.
