Iain Duffy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Sciences at Saint Leo University, actively teaching since 2019 through scheduled 2025 courses in the HHMI-funded SEA-PHAGES program. He instructs undergraduate students in phage discovery and bioinformatics using Microbacterium foliorum as the primary host organism.
His research centers on Bacteriophage Biology, Antibiotic Resistance Mechanisms, and Tumor Angiogenesis. Within SEA-PHAGES, he leads students in isolating novel phages and genomic analysis, contributing to national bacteriophage databases while exploring therapeutic applications against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Professor Duffy teaches 10-15 freshmen per phage discovery section (BIO-100/159) and bioinformatics courses (BIO-200), with additional instruction in microbiology, virology, genetics, and immunology. He participates in national SEA events including the 2025 Phage Genomics Workshop and 2026 SEA Symposium, mentoring undergraduates in wet-lab and computational research within the SEA-PHAGES collaborative network.
