Magdi Mohareb is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ottawa. He holds a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Alberta (1995), an M.Sc. from Texas Tech University, and a B.Sc. from Cairo University. He has been a faculty member since 2000 and was granted tenure in 2010.
His research focuses on structural engineering, particularly in the areas of steel structures, finite element modeling, pipeline buckling, and lateral-torsional stability. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of steel pipe behavior under combined loads and the development of advanced finite elements for structural simulation.
The body of his published work, including over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and a co-authored book, demonstrates a strong emphasis on computational and experimental structural mechanics. His research spans topics such as buckling analysis, full-scale testing, and nonlinear behavior of steel components, with consistent applications in energy and infrastructure systems.
Scientific recognition includes being listed in Who's Who in Computer Science and Engineering (2004–2005) and membership in prestigious honor societies Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi. He is also an Associate Editor for the Open Construction and Building Technology Journal and has served on conference scientific committees.
Professor Mohareb has advised graduate students and has been actively involved in research funding, serving as a peer reviewer for NSERC, CANMET, and Qatar National Research Fund. His professional affiliations include the American Society of Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers Institute, Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, and licensing with Professional Engineers of Ontario and APEGGA.
He leads research initiatives involving advanced structural modeling and testing, often in collaboration with industry partners in the oil, gas, and petrochemical sectors. His lab work emphasizes full-scale experimental validation and high-fidelity numerical simulations to improve design standards and safety protocols.
