Magdalena López is a Visiting Associate Professor at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies (University of Notre Dame) and a Research Fellow at the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL). Her work focuses on culture criticism and literature in the Hispanophone Caribbean, with an emphasis on cultural exchange between Lusophone Africa and the Caribbean.

López explores interdisciplinary themes such as collective memory, migration, and authoritarianism in Latin American democracies, particularly through the lens of Caribbean literature, cinema, and transnational cultural practices. Her research bridges literature, film, and social movements, highlighting the role of the arts in addressing inequality and human rights.
She co-edited the book New Perspectives on Hispanic Caribbean Studies (2020), which examines critical theoretical trends in Hispanic Caribbean scholarship. Her work has been published in journals such as Iberoamericana América Latina-España-Portugal and Bulletin of Latin American Studies.

López has participated in grants including the 2019–2020 Faculty Conference Grant for 'Political Thought, Democracy and Inequality in Latin America' and the 2018–2019 Faculty Conference Grant for 'Venezuela: Humanitarian Crisis and Perspectives for Change'. She is also a co-chair of the Latin American Critical Cultural Studies Working Group, which analyzes intersections of cultural production and societal challenges in Latin America and beyond.
