Dr. Barnoux's research centers on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who interact with the criminal justice system, particularly as perpetrators, victims, or witnesses. She has extensive expertise in deliberate firesetting behavior among this population, focusing on its aetiology, characteristics, and assessment. Her work spans forensic settings including prisons, probation, secure hospitals, and police services. She has developed assessment tools such as the Adapted Firesetting Assessment Scale and contributed to typologies for autistic individuals in psychiatric care. Her research has significant applied value, informing policy and practice through collaborations with the Home Office, Ministry of Justice, NHS England, and the National Autistic Society.
Her recent publications reflect a strong trend in understanding firesetting behavior chains, psychopathy in autistic populations, and improving psychiatric and community care for people with IDD and autism.
