Dr. Madeleine Mant holds the position of Adjunct Professor at Memorial University’s Archaeology Department within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her primary appointment is as Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga. She completed her Ph.D. in Anthropology at McMaster University in 2016 and served as a SSHRC Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at Memorial University from 2017–2019. Her research integrates bioarchaeological analysis with historical records to explore health disparities among marginalized populations in historical contexts, particularly focusing on skeletal trauma, dietary patterns, and mobility.
Her work emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches combining archaeology, chemistry, and experimental physics. Notable projects include investigating 18th-/19th-century sailors’ life histories and analyzing War of 1812 battlefield trauma. Key publications address urban health in post-medieval England, isotopic residential tracking, and dental caries patterns. Mant’s research bridges gaps between skeletal evidence and archival data to reconstruct underrepresented individuals’ lives.
- SSHRC Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship (2017–2019)
- Co-editor of Beyond the Bones: Engaging with Disparate Datasets (Elsevier, 2016)
Her advising and grants include postdoctoral mentorship and collaborative projects on historical demography. She has contributed to conservation efforts in Egyptian funerary archaeology and WWII commemorative studies.
