Dr. Maciej Turek is an Assistant Professor of political science at the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, Faculty of International and Political Studies, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. He specializes in American politics with a focus on the US political system, election campaigns, political communication, electoral systems, local government systems, and political financing.
Dr. Turek holds a PhD in political science (2012) and has been affiliated with several prestigious institutions through fellowships including the Copernicus Society of America (Dickinson College, USA, 2008), the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin (2009, 2014), the Society-Environment-Technology program of the Jagiellonian University (2013, 2015), and the Kościuszko Foundation (George Mason University, 2017). He served as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Rochester during the summer semester of 2020.
His research interests center on the intricacies of the US political system, with particular attention to election campaigns and processes, political communication strategies across different electoral contexts, electoral system design, local government structures, and the complex landscape of political financing in American democracy. Dr. Turek has examined these topics through historical analysis, comparative frameworks, and contemporary case studies.
Dr. Turek's scholarly contributions reveal a consistent focus on American electoral processes and institutional dynamics. His work spans from historical analyses of 19th century political communication to contemporary examinations of campaign finance, congressional oversight, and the challenges facing American democracy in the post-January 6 era. His research demonstrates expertise in both theoretical frameworks and practical applications of political science to real-world democratic processes.
Among his notable recognitions, Dr. Turek has received research grants from the Polish National Science Centre for projects on 'Campaign Finance and the Future of U.S. Democracy' and 'Congressional Oversight of the Executive Branch in the United States in a Polarization Era.' He has co-edited significant volumes including 'The Crossroads Elections: European Perspectives on the 2022 U.S. Midterm Elections' (Routledge, 2024).
As an academic mentor, Dr. Turek has directed the TransAtlantic Studies program from 2020 to 2023 and has served as supervisor of the American Studies Student Research Group at the Jagiellonian University since 2024 (and previously from 2015 to 2020). His professional affiliations include membership in the Polish Political Science Association (PTNP), the American Political Science Association (APSA), and the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA).
