Macarena Gomez-Barris is the Timothy C. Forbes and Anne S. Harrison University Professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University, serving as Chair of the Modern Culture and Media Department and Director of the Center for Environmental Humanities. Her research focuses on decolonial environmental humanities, extractivism, media environments, and the intersection of cultural theory with artistic practice. She holds affiliations with the Brown Arts Institute and leads the Elemental Media Lab.

She is the author of four books, including At the Sea’s Edge (forthcoming) and The Extractive Zone (2017). Her teaching spans courses like Racial Ecologies and Decolonial Futurities.
