Loftin's research centers on the intersection of Christian theology and political thought, with particular focus on far-right nationalisms throughout the twentieth century and contemporary movements. His scholarly work investigates how theological concepts of sacrament, incarnation, Christology, ecclesiology, and salvation are appropriated and transformed during political crises.
His recent publications reveal a consistent engagement with critical theological responses to pressing political issues, especially the connections between climate denialism and far-right political movements. Loftin's work draws on thinkers like James Baldwin and Georges Bataille to analyze the political theology underlying contemporary far-right climate politics, demonstrating how theological concepts are mobilized in anti-scientific political narratives.
His scholarship represents significant contributions to understanding the theological dimensions of political movements, particularly examining how religious concepts are deployed in contexts of climate change denial and nationalist politics.
