Dr. Mac Campbell is a Charles Gilbert Heydon Travelling Research Fellow at The University of Sydney and affiliated with the Genomic Variation Laboratory at UC Davis. He holds a B.A. in Biology and Spanish from Willamette University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His research focuses on applying genomic tools to address conservation and exploitation challenges in aquatic organisms, with expertise in structural genomics, hybridization dynamics, fisheries 'omics, and fish phylogenetics. Current projects include phylogenomic studies of Indo-Pacific fishes (Lates calcarifer), percichthyid blackfishes (Gadopsis), and Great Basin fish biodiversity.
Key collaborations include the Australian Fish Genomics Initiative and state departments (NSW DPIRD, WA DPIRD). Notable contributions involve delimiting management units for barramundi and resolving taxonomic uncertainties in species such as the Murray Cod and Trout Cod. His work integrates genomic resources and evolutionary analyses to inform conservation strategies, with publications spanning fish taxonomy, epigenetic adaptation in hatcheries, and chromosomal inversion studies in rainbow trout.
Dr. Campbell's research themes emphasize ecological resilience through genomic approaches, with a strong focus on applying 'omics technologies to real-world conservation and aquaculture challenges.
