Maartje van der Woude is Professor of Law and Society at Leiden University, affiliated with the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society under Leiden Law School. She also holds cross-border affiliations with the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law at the University of Oslo and the Center for the International Comparative Study of Criminology at the University of Montreal.
Her research focuses on the intersection of crime control, immigration, and border policies—termed crimmigration. She explores how local state and non-state actors navigate European and national policies on cross-border mobility, addressing themes like exceptionalism, belonging, race, national identity, and sovereignty. She leads the 5-year NWO-funded project Getting to the Core of Crimmigration.

In 2018, she received the Young Scientist Award in the Humanities for her academic contributions and public engagement. She is co-editing the book Crimmigrant Nations: Resurgent Nationalism and the Closing of Borders (Fordham University Press, 2020).
