Maartje van der Woude is a Professor of Law and Society at Leiden University, affiliated with the Van Vollenhoven Institute. Her research focuses on crimmigration, counter-terrorism law, and the societal impact of legal frameworks. She holds a VIDI grant for the 'Getting to the Core of Crimmigration' project (NWO-funded). Notable awards include the 2025 Theoretical Criminology Best Article Prize and the 2015 Ada and Paul Cornil Prize.
Her teaching spans law, criminology, and sociology of law at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She supervises 6 PhD students and has mentored Honours students since 2013. Ancillary roles include honorary judge at the District Court of South Holland and board memberships with CINETS and the Dutch Law & Society Association.
Key research themes include border control dynamics, discretionary practices in migration enforcement, and the politicization of security measures. Recent work explores ethno-racial profiling and the human dimensions of border enforcement through field narratives.
