Maartje Raijmakers is a Full Professor of Educational Sciences and Cognitive Development at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and holds an ancillary position as Bijzonder Hoogleraar in Cognitive Development Psychology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). She is affiliated with LEARN! - the Learning Sciences research institute. Her work focuses on cognitive and perceptual development across the lifespan, particularly in learning mechanisms, causal reasoning, and science education. She has led projects such as INTERLEARN (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant) and contributed to initiatives like Kleuters aan Zet in NEMO.
Education: PhD in Cognitive Development from the University of Amsterdam (1996), with postdoctoral research in developmental systems theory and neural network modeling. She has supervised numerous PhD students and postdocs, including Iris Bogaers, Tessa Slim, and Rooske Franse.
Research interests span developmental learning strategies, individual differences in perception, and the application of computational models (e.g., Hidden Markov Models) to study cognitive processes. Her work bridges formal and informal learning settings, including science museums and classroom environments.
Key contributions include studies on habituation in infants, rule-learning in toddlers, and the role of curiosity in science engagement. Her awards include the 2018 grant for inquiry-based learning in special education.
Labs/Teams: LEARN! Learning Sciences, collaborations with NEMO Science Museum, and interdisciplinary teams at the Amsterdam Brain & Cognition Research Priority Programme.
