Maarten Vanvolsem is a photographic artist and academic associated with the KU Leuven through its LUCA School of Arts. He holds the position of Expertise Director for Artistic Paradigm & Methods and previously served as Vice Dean of Education at LUCA. His academic background includes a PhD in art studies from KU Leuven (defended after initial work at Newcastle University) and research at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht.
His research focuses on the boundaries of photography, particularly the representation of time and motion through innovative techniques. Notable works include The Art of Strip Photography (2011) and his reimagining of the 1914 Futurist manifesto in Photodynamism Revisited (2016). He designs custom cameras to explore spatial and temporal aspects of photography, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
Recent publications address art education policy, including the importance of dynamic teaching qualifications in arts education (2023) and threats to art in compulsory education (2021). He supervises doctoral research, such as Hana Miletić’s project on textile-based photographic works (2019).
His work spans experimental photography, interactive installations, and theoretical contributions to art and technology. Current roles involve shaping artistic methodologies and curricula at LUCA School of Arts.
