Maarten Kossmann is a Professor of Berber Studies at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics. His research focuses on Amazigh (Berber) languages, including language description, historical development, and oral literature. He investigates language contact phenomena, such as interactions between Berber and dialectal Arabic, as well as influences from Moroccan heritage languages on Dutch. His work also explores broader linguistic contexts, including relations with Sub-Saharan languages like Songhay.
Dr. Kossmann advises several PhD candidates, including Shehu Aliyu Waziri, Tina Bougag, Ryan Buttacavoli, and Hamza Khwaja. He has been nominated for the 2022 Faculty Teaching Prize, reflecting his contributions to academic instruction. His research emphasizes the dynamic evolution of Berber languages and their sociolinguistic roles in contemporary societies.
