Maarten Doorman is an Endowed Professor of Cultural History of Germany at the Faculty of Humanities, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), supported by DIA (Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam). He concurrently teaches philosophy at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Maastricht University, and University College Maastricht. His academic roles are complemented by editorial stints as editor of the literary magazine Hollands Maandblad and the philosophical journal Krisis, alongside contributions as a critic for leading Dutch newspapers NRC and de Volkskrant.
His research focuses on cultural history, philosophy, and intellectual history, with specializations in Germany’s Enlightenment and Romanticism, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte), and the intersections of art, politics, and literature. Notable works include Art in Progress (2003), De romantische orde (2012), and Een jager in het woud (2023), exploring themes like authenticity, avant-garde art, and cultural memory. His writing spans academic and public spheres, addressing visual arts, poetry, and European identity.
Teaching includes the Specialisation Tutorial Master History course (2024–2025). No ancillary activities are disclosed.
