Maarten Blaauw

Maarten Blaauw is a Professor in the School of Natural and Built Environment at Queen's University Belfast, where he also serves as Director of the 14CHRONO Centre for Climate, the Environment and Chronology. His research focuses on palaeoecology, statistical modeling of environmental data, and radiocarbon chronology. He holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (2003) and is an active supervisor of PhD students.

His research interests lie at the intersection of environmental science and statistics, particularly in palaeoecology, age-depth modeling, radiocarbon calibration, and statistical interpretation of proxy archives. He develops and maintains R packages for chronological modeling, supporting open and reproducible science. His work is instrumental in improving the accuracy of dating methods used in Quaternary science.

The recent articles highlight a consistent focus on chronological precision, climate-environment interactions, and statistical innovation in palaeoenvironmental research. Maarten Blaauw is actively involved in major research projects such as MexiDrill and QUADRAT, serving as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator. He has hosted workshops and delivered invited talks internationally, demonstrating strong leadership in the academic community.

He leads the 14CHRONO Centre, a key research hub for climate and environmental chronology, fostering collaborations across disciplines and institutions. His team integrates field data, statistical modeling, and software development to advance understanding of past environmental change.
