Maarja Ojamaa is an Associate Professor of Semiotics at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, affiliated with the Institute of Philosophy and Semiotics. Her research focuses on semiotics of culture, transmedial processes, and digital cultural heritage. She holds a PhD in Semiotics and Culture Studies from the University of Tartu (2015) and has extensive experience in academic leadership, including co-supervising the Transmedia Research Group since 2016.
Her career includes roles such as Research Fellow and Post-doctoral researcher, with affiliations at Tallinn University and the University of Tartu. She has contributed to projects like 'The cultural value of transmediality and development of digital educational platforms' (2021–2024) as principal investigator. Ojamaa's research interests span cultural semiotics, transmedia narratives, and digital archives. She has published extensively on topics like transmedia pedagogy, digital heritage, and cultural memory. Her 2020 award 'Semiootiline jälg' from the Estonian Semiotics Association recognizes her contributions to semiotics. She has advised numerous students, focusing on interdisciplinary projects in cultural studies and digital humanities.
Her work integrates theoretical semiotics with practical applications, such as the Education on Screen platform for digital learning. She collaborates internationally, contributing to global discussions on media studies and cultural theory.
