Maarit Mäkelä is a Professor in the Department of Design Empirica at Aalto University, specializing in the intersection of ceramics, fine art, and practice-led research. She holds a Doctoral degree in Arts and Design from the Helsinki University of Arts and Design (2003) and a Master's degree from the same institution (1994). Her work explores materiality, femininity in art, and sustainable practices, with over 118 publications and artistic outputs. Mäkelä has led major projects like MakerStudioPeda (material-based pedagogy) and 3D KERA (geopolymer ceramics innovation). She co-edited influential books on artistic research and initiated the 'The Art of Research' conference series.
Key research areas include material-driven creativity, ecological relationality, and the ethics of artistic practices. Her exhibitions and collaborations span global venues, addressing themes like soil communities and water ethics. Awards include the Design Museum Helsinki Open Call (2020) and the Lappeenranta Ceramic Competition (2000). Mäkelä actively contributes to academic governance as Chair of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture and serves on editorial and review boards.
