Maarij Syed is a Professor of Physics and Optical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Notre Dame (1998) and a BS in Astrophysics from the University of Oklahoma (1991). His research focuses on semiconductor materials, magnetic materials, semiconductor optics, and microfabrication, with current projects investigating polymer magnetism and nanoparticle magnetism. He co-leads the Independent Project/Research Opportunities Program and contributes to STEM education through Rose-Hulman’s PRISM program, training K-12 teachers. His work spans magneto-optics, material characterization, and nanoparticle analysis, with over 20 years of academic research experience.
Research interests include magneto-optic effects in nanostructured materials, magnetic nanoparticle dynamics, and plasmonic phenomena. He has published extensively in journals like Journal of Applied Physics and Materials Research Society Symposium, focusing on topics such as iron oxide nanoparticles, nickel alloy nanofilms, and doped semiconductors. His contributions highlight interdisciplinary approaches to material science and optical engineering.
Teaching focuses on optics, material science, and foundational physics courses. He advises student research projects and actively engages in curriculum development through Rose-Hulman’s academic programs.
