Dr. MUSA TARTIK is a Lecturer at Bingol University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. He currently holds a visiting researcher position at UNC School of Medicine (2024–present) and has held roles as a Research Associate at Bingol University since 2020. His work focuses on synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and yeast-based systems for biotechnological applications. Tartik has conducted research at Chalmers University of Technology (2019–2020) and holds prestigious fellowships including the Aziz Sancar Postdoctoral Fellowship and TUBITAK 2219 Fellowship.
Education: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Bingol University (2018), M.Sc. in Molecular Biology from Istanbul Technical University (2013), and B.Sc. in Biology from Istanbul Technical University (2011). His doctoral thesis explored Saccharomyces cerevisiae resistance to PCM and its metabolic trans-effects on PC3 cells.
Research Interests: Tartik’s work integrates synthetic biology and systems biology to engineer microbial cell factories for sustainable production of compounds like flavonoids. Key projects include yeast biosensor development for microplastics, optimization of carotenoid production in yeasts, and studies on bacterial DNA uptake mechanisms. He has led projects funded by TUBITAK and CRDF Global, emphasizing biosafety and biosecurity in laboratory settings.
Grants & Awards: As a Principal Investigator, Tartik leads projects such as the Microplastic Patrol Yeast Biosensor (TUBITAK 1001, 2025–2028) and has developed bactosensor prototypes for chrysotile asbestos detection. His research has been supported by fellowships focusing on synthetic biology and public health training.
Labs & Teams: Tartik is actively involved in the Sancar Lab at UNC and the Synthetic Biology group at Chalmers University. His team collaborates on projects like yeast engineering for flavonoid production and DNA repair mechanisms in bacteria. He mentors students in both graduate and undergraduate research programs.
