MARIO CAL VARELA

Mario Cal Varela is a Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela, affiliated with the Department of English and German Philology under the Faculty of Philology. His research focuses on applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, and the integration of technology in language education. He holds a PhD from the University of Santiago de Compostela (2001), titled Some sociolinguistic aspects of Gibraltarian English: quantitative analysis of three variables at the phonetic level, supervised by Dr. Mauro Fernández.

His contributions include the development of the SUNCODAC corpus, analyzing student online discussions, and the LOLIPOP electronic portfolio project.

His publications explore topics such as mitigation strategies in online feedback, citation patterns in academic discussions, and transcultural aspects of healthcare communication. He collaborates with the research group LAEAITDT (Linguistics Applied to Teaching and Learning of English, Translation, and Textual Design).

Advising & Grants: He has supervised projects like the LOLIPOP electronic portfolio initiative (2010) and contributed to the creation of multilingual lexicographic resources for language education. His work often bridges theoretical linguistics with practical pedagogical applications.
