Maria Alvarez de la Granja

Maria Álvarez de la Granja is a Full Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela, affiliated with the Department of Galician Philology and the Faculty of Philology. She coordinates the Degree in Galician Language and Literature and serves as Secretary of the journal Estudos de Lingüística Galega. She has been a member of the Galician Language Institute (ILG) and the research group FILGA (Galician Philology and Linguistics).

She earned her PhD in Galician Philology from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 2002 with a thesis on phraseological units in Galician verbal locutions, supervised by Dr. Francisco Antonio Cidrás Escáneo. Her research focuses on Galician language structure, lexicography, corpus linguistics, and sociolinguistics, particularly exploring lexical variation, language standardization, and the influence of Spanish on Galician.

Her work includes seminal studies on the CORTEGAL corpus of student texts, the Dispogal available lexicon project, and the analysis of phraseological units in historical and modern Galician. She has also contributed to Galician-Italian and English-Galician dictionaries, emphasizing standardization and lexical preservation.
