M. Reza Pirbhai is an Associate Professor at Georgetown University's Qatar campus, affiliated with the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. His research focuses on Islam in Modern South Asia, with expertise in South Asian and World history. He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Toronto (2004), alongside an M.A. from the same institution and a B.Sc. from Dalhousie University.
His academic specialties include Islamic law and theology, Hindu nationalism, and British travel literature. Key publications include the books Reconsidering Islam in a South Asian Context (2009) and Fatima Jinnah: Mother of the Nation (2017), as well as articles in journals like Modern Intellectual History and South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies.
Pirbhai's work bridges historical analysis with contemporary political dynamics, particularly examining how religious and cultural narratives shape modern identities in South Asia and the Indian Ocean world. His recent research explores transregional connections between South Asia and the Arabian Peninsula through the lens of 'Indo-Arabia.'
Before joining Georgetown, he held positions at Louisiana State University and the University of Manitoba. His career reflects a commitment to interdisciplinary approaches in understanding the complexities of colonial and postcolonial societies.
