Bernard Haykel is a Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University, where he directs the Institute for the Transregional Study of the Contemporary Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. He holds a doctorate in Oriental Studies from the University of Oxford (1998) with expertise in Islamic history and contemporary politics.
His research explores tensions arising from religious identity and authority, with emphases on:
- Political economy and security frameworks in the Middle East
- Nonconventional energy resources and their societal impacts
- Historical and modern dynamics of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula
- Salafism, Islamic reform movements, and transnational jihadist ideologies
