M. Foster Olive is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University, where he also serves as Associate Director of Undergraduate Neuroscience. His work focuses on addiction neuroscience, examining neurobiological mechanisms of drug dependence and developing novel therapeutic targets.
- Undergraduate: Psychology, University of California-San Diego (1991)
- PhD: Neuroscience, University of California-Los Angeles (1997)
Dr. Olive's research investigates how abused drugs induce neuroinflammatory processes, neurochemical changes, and structural alterations in brain circuits. His lab explores molecular mechanisms of addiction and individual vulnerability, with a focus on alcohol, psychostimulants, and cannabinoids.
His recent publications span neuroimmunology, psychopharmacology, and addiction science, with a particular emphasis on cytokine dynamics in methamphetamine use, immunomodulatory therapies, and cannabis-related cognitive effects. This work bridges neuroscience and pharmacology.
- Nominee, Zebulon Pearce Distinguished Teaching Award (2012, 2018)
- Elected Fellow, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (2016)
- Professor of Impact Award, ASU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (2023)
Dr. Olive has chaired doctoral committees for eight graduate students and secured multiple NIH grants including R01 AA025590 (2016-2023), R01 DA043172 (2017-2023), R01 DA055153 (2023-2024), and R01 AA030061 (2023-2028).
